"When
a politician or policy advocate starts talking about doing something
for the sake of "our children", it's a wise reflex to put
your hand over your wallet and pray. You're about to get a little poorer
and a little less free to raise your kids as you see fit.
The 'our
children" appeal was at the heart of Hillary Clinton's book It
Takes a Village; it remains one of the most effective ways to stifle
debate and foist more top-down, centralized control upon American families.
Of course,
if you're a parent, you may be excused for wondering just when your
kids became the rightful property of the society at large. Did you sleep
through the hearing where joint custody was awarded to a committee composed
of Oprah, the Children;s Defense Fund (CDF), the Department of Education,
and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services."
